Which documents are required for official coffin sealing and the corpse transport permit (Leichenpass)?

The following documents and information are usually required to prepare the corpse transport permit (Leichenpass):

  • Copy of the medical death certificate (available from the civil registry office at the place of death)
  • Extract from the death register or confirmation that the death has been registered (available from the civil registry office at the place of death)
  • Identity document with a photograph of the deceased person
  • Information on the transport route, including the Switzerland-abroad border crossing, destination country, stopovers and means of transport
  • Where applicable, information on embalming, transport embalming, dry ice or other transport-related measures
  • Cost of coffin sealing, including the corpse transport permit (Leichenpass): 346.50 Swiss francs in cash or by debit or credit card

Depending on the destination country or transport route, further documents may be required. The legal requirements concerning the coffin, transport and placing in the coffin must generally be clarified by the funeral home or the competent authorities.
