About us
The Department of Forensic Medicine and Imaging at our Zurich site is committed to providing scientifically founded, precise and responsible support to the rule of law. We examine deceased and living individuals, document injuries and prepare medical-forensic reports for the judiciary and public authorities. Our aim is to gather objective findings and interpret them in a transparent and professionally sound manner.
At the same time, forensic medicine sees itself as part of the social support system for victims of violence. We are committed to making access to forensic medical expertise as accessible as possible and to enabling early, independent documentation – even without an immediate police report. In this way, we help to safeguard options for action for those affected and to further develop care structures based on evidence.
A key focus of our work is the quality-assured recording and analysis of forensic findings. Established methods are combined with modern technology: imaging techniques as well as three-dimensional documentation and reconstruction methods enable a precise representation of injuries and complex circumstances and improve the transparency of our findings.
Our work is interdisciplinary in nature. Forensic medicine and forensic science work closely together at our Zurich site. Many forensic issues require an interdisciplinary approach that brings together medical, scientific and technical expertise. Coordinated processes and high quality standards help to continuously develop forensic work.
Research, teaching and practice are geared towards sustainably strengthening quality, transparency and trust in forensic expertise. We help to contextualise forensic findings and highlight their relevance beyond criminal proceedings – in the service of justice and society.
